Rev. Dr. Eural Alexander - Pastor’s “Hour of Power “ Daily Meditation: Overcoming Substance Abuse Through God’s Strength
Greetings, beloved Family and Fellow Believers in the Almighty Lord ! Today, we gather to discuss a difficult yet important topic—substance abuse among believers. In my book “The Shadows Beneath the Pew” - The Assault Against the Church by the Spirit of Addiction I discuss this topic for a copy email at the address below.
This struggle in which we will explore together today in out “ Hour of Power “ can affect individuals from all walks of life, including those within the church. It is essential to address this issue with compassion and understanding, emphasizing that God offers hope, healing, and restoration. Let’s delve deeper into this matter with a sense of urgency and understanding. There are essential elements that we need to consider:
Acknowledging the Struggle
Substance abuse can manifest in various forms—alcohol, drugs, or other addictive behaviors. For many, it may begin as a means of coping with stress, pain, or emotional turmoil. However, it can quickly spiral into a cycle of dependence that affects not only the individual but also their relationships and spiritual lives. In Romans 7:15 (NIV), the Apostle Paul candidly expresses this struggle, saying, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” This verse resonates with many who find themselves caught in the grip of addiction, feeling trapped by their choices.
God’s Desire for Wholeness
God desires wholeness for His children. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NIV) reminds us, “May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” God wants to bring healing to every aspect of our lives—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. He longs for us to experience the fullness of joy and peace that comes from living in accordance with His will.
Turning to God for Help
When faced with the challenges of substance abuse, it is vital to turn to God for help. Psalm 46:1 (NIV) reassures us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” In moments of weakness, we can find strength in God’s presence. He invites us to cast our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7) and to seek His guidance in our struggles.
The Power of Community
As believers, we are called to support one another in our journeys toward healing. Galatians 6:2 (NIV) encourages us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Engaging with a supportive community can provide accountability, encouragement, and understanding. Whether through church groups, counseling, or faith-based recovery programs, there are many resources available for those struggling with addiction.
Finding Freedom Through Christ
Jesus came to bring freedom to the captives. Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) states, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” This promise is not just for those outside the church; it is for all of us. Through faith in Christ, we can find the strength to break free from the chains of addiction and experience true transformation.
Practical Steps Toward Healing
1. Seek God in Prayer: Make prayer a regular part of your life. Ask God for strength to overcome your struggles and for guidance on the path to healing.
2. Participate in Support Groups: Engage with support groups or recovery programs that align with your faith. Sharing your experiences with others who understand can provide encouragement.
3. Establish Healthy Boundaries: Identify triggers and establish boundaries that protect you from situations that may lead to substance abuse.
4. Focus on the Word: Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Scriptures like Philippians 4:13 (NIV) remind us, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Meditating on these truths can help reinforce your faith and resilience.
In conclusion and the encouragement to the believers today-
Substance abuse is a challenging struggle, but it does not have to define your life. God offers hope, healing, and the promise of restoration. As you seek Him and engage with a supportive community, know that you are not alone in this battle. God is with you, ready to empower you to overcome any obstacle.
Let us close our meditation with a prayer:Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, acknowledging the struggles of substance abuse that many face. Lord, we ask for Your healing touch to bring freedom to those who are bound by addiction. Help them to seek You as their refuge and strength. Surround them with a loving community that supports them in their journey toward wholeness. May they find hope in Your promises and strength in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
